About Us

     The great fraternity was founded in 1946, driven by the aftermath of World War II. A group of four idealistic young medical interns, led by the late Bro. Dr. Augusto Julian Santos Ramos, Sr., the Founding Father of Tau Mu Sigma Phi, recognized the need for reconstruction. On January 5, 1946, together with his close friends and Tau Mu Sigma Phi pioneers—Bro. Dr. Antonino Monillas Ignacio, Bro. Dr. Arturo Alberto Ramirez, and Bro. Dr. Pablo Gamboa Gutierrez—he established an organization exclusively for male medical students who answered the call. Thus, Tau Mu Sigma Phi, The Thomasian Medical Students’ Fraternity, was conceived as the University of Santo Tomas’ first and premier fraternity.

     The ideals of Academic Excellence, Leadership, Service, and Brotherhood have guided its members to excel throughout the years.

     Tau Mu Sigma Phi was the first fraternity at the entire university to be officially recognized by the Office of Student Affairs under MEC number 5672. UST presented the fraternity with the prestigious Pope Leo XIII Award for its organizational efforts toward community service, in recognition of its commitment to humanitarian service.

     The fraternity has grown from a handful of members to over a thousand brothers worldwide. It now has the SEC-registered Tauan Alumni Organization (TAO) in the Philippines and has expanded globally with the Tau Mu Sigma Phi USA Foundation, a 501(c) US SEC-registered entity. Tauans are also practicing physicians in Australia, England, the Middle East, and Canada. The fraternity’s members have sworn to uphold its ideals and are known for their exemplary character, with impressive track records of credentials and achievements. Over the years, Tauans have been honored and recognized by various institutions and governments for their professional accomplishments, volunteerism, and humanitarian service, leaving an indelible mark on the world.
